The Heart of Our Community: Why Shopping Local Matters

The Heart of Our Community: Why Shopping Local Matters

After 42 years of being a beloved cornerstone in our community, a cherished local business has shut its doors for the last time. Officially, infrastructure issues were cited as the reason for closure, but as a loyal patron for over three years, I suspect there were other underlying problems. For many of us, this was more than just a place to shop or dine; it was our Thursday night hangout, our dance haven. We recognized the regulars and welcomed the newbies, creating a tight-knit community bound by shared experiences on the dance floor.

This establishment was unique in many ways: it boasted the largest dance floor in town, offered high-quality dance lessons for just $5, and occasionally hosted "midget wrestling" events. The void left by its closure will be felt deeply by the community for years to come.

It broke my heart to see the place nearly empty on some nights, or to hear that it had to close early due to a lack of business. Yet, when the announcement of its closure came, the place was suddenly packed. People who had driven past without stopping or who had said they would visit "someday" flocked to dance, drink, and dine at their "favorite spot" before it was too late. This raises an important question: where were these people in the days, weeks, and months when the business needed their support to stay afloat?

Every year, we celebrate Shop Local Saturday or Small Business Saturday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. But how many of us actually take the time to support our local "mom and pop shops" regularly? Shopping online and having items delivered to our doorstep is convenient, but what is the true cost of this convenience? What makes our town unique? What sets us apart from the other "Any Town USA"? Does shopping local really make a difference?
